How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is Assigned.
Almost all assignments, no matter how complicated, can be reduced to a single question. Your first step, then, is to distill the assignment into a specific question. For example, if your assignment is, “Write a report to the local school board explaining the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class,” turn the request into a question like, “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?” After you’ve chosen the question your essay will answer, compose one or two complete sentences answering that question.
Q: “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?”
A: “The potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class are . . .”
OR
A: “Using computers in a fourth-grade class promises to improve . . .”
The answer to the question is the thesis statement for the essay

How to Tell a Strong Thesis Statement from a Weak One.
1. A strong thesis statement takes some sort of stand.
Remember that your thesis needs to show your conclusions about a subject. For example, if you are writing a paper for a class on fitness, you might be asked to choose a popular weight-loss product to evaluate. Here are two thesis statements:
There are some negative and positive aspects to the Banana Herb Tea Supplement.
This is a weak thesis statement. First, it fails to take a stand. Second, the phrase negative and positive aspects is vague.
Because Banana Herb Tea Supplement promotes rapid weight loss that results in the loss of muscle and lean body mass, it poses a potential danger to customers.
This is a strong thesis because it takes a stand, and because it’s specific.
2. A strong thesis statement justifies discussion.
Your thesis should indicate the point of the discussion. If your assignment is to write a paper on kinship systems, using your own family as an example, you might come up with either of these two thesis statements:
My family is an extended family.
This is a weak thesis because it merely states an observation. Your reader won’t be able to tell the point of the statement, and will probably stop reading.
While most American families would view consanguineal marriage as a threat to the nuclear family structure, many Iranian families, like my own, believe that these marriages help reinforce kinship ties in an extended family.
This is a strong thesis because it shows how your experience contradicts a widely-accepted view. A good strategy for creating a strong thesis is to show that the topic is controversial. Readers will be interested in reading the rest of the essay to see how you support your point.
3. A strong thesis statement expresses one main idea.
Readers need to be able to see that your paper has one main point. If your thesis statement expresses more than one idea, then you might confuse your readers about the subject of your paper. For example:
Companies need to exploit the marketing potential of the Internet, and Web pages can provide both advertising and customer support.
This is a weak thesis statement because the reader can’t decide whether the paper is about marketing on the Internet or Web pages. To revise the thesis, the relationship between the two ideas needs to become more clear. One way to revise the thesis would be to write:
Because the Internet is filled with tremendous marketing potential, companies should exploit this potential by using Web pages that offer both advertising and customer support.
This is a strong thesis because it shows that the two ideas are related. Hint: a great many clear and engaging thesis statements contain words like because, since, so, although, unless, and however.
4. A strong thesis statement is specific.
A thesis statement should show exactly what your paper will be about, and will help you keep your paper to a manageable topic. For example, if you’re writing a seven-to-ten page paper on hunger, you might say:
World hunger has many causes and effects.
This is a weak thesis statement for two major reasons. First, world hunger can’t be discussed thoroughly in seven to ten pages. Second, many causes and effects is vague. You should be able to identify specific causes and effects. A revised thesis might look like this:
Hunger persists in Glandelinia because jobs are scarce and farming in the infertile soil is rarely profitabl

Which Online Trading Should I Go For?

Hi

I am new to all these markets and looking to start with it.

I wanted to go for an Online Trading Company like India Bulls, Sharekhan etc.

I aim for being both a Long Term Investor in 2-3 Shares, and do regular Intra-Day Trading

I have seen India Bulls Charting system and found them to be good but don’t know what are their Broker Charges, Account Opening Charges?

I am a long term investor and not into daily trading. So this answer below, is probably not teh best answer for what you have asked.

But there will be important pointers to what should also be considered while deciding on the trading platform. So here goes.

I have personal experience with ICICIDirect, HDFC Securities and Motilal Oswal. I don’t trade on a daily basis and am a long term investor. So for me brokerage rates don’t matter much.

For me what matters are the following:
1. Reliability of the platform -I can transact when I want
2. Correctness in transaction records, account debits, demat credits, shortfall management
3. User-friendliness of interface – you can find what you want quickly
4. Promptness of customer helpdesk in replying to emails
5. Ability to do everything from one single place – like demat account, trading account, and bank account are all managed by the same entity, so there is single place of accountability

Given all these in my experience ICICIDirect still scores the best. It has the highest no of subscribers. It used to have some transaction problems earlier, but over the past year, I cannot recollect instances where I couldn’t execute a buy/sell when I wanted it. (HDFC Securities & Motilal OSwal both have miles to go on this front, systems cant keep up with the load on exceptionally high traffic days -jan 22/23). Their User interface is the best, you can locate what to do and where very fast, almost intuitively. Their transaction records are impeccable, you have peace of mind. Couldn’t say the same for Motilal Oswal (I had to track and remind them to make good the shortfall when I bought and paid for 20 shares of Wyeth Pharma but demat was only for 16 after a week). And single place of accountability makes sure i deal with the same party and can get things resolved faster.

No matter what arguments you hear against, perhaps the biggest argument in favour of ICICIDirect is that they have been operating these services from 1999. That’s close to a decade of experience in handling extremes of load, variety of software and technical issues, customer complaints , and have matured over the years.

The others may give you cheaper brokerage rates (and that matters if you are a day trader) but have much more to cover before they can reach similar levels of maturity as a service provider.

My 2 cents. Hope they were useful & happy investing!

Where can I find an advisor for a career in options trading?

I think I would like to have my next career be as a self employed options trader.

After a 14 year career in the Engineering and IT world I moved last year into a career in finance, specifically as a commercial lending officer for a large credit union ($1.5B.) My education career started in Engineering (including 19 hours of Calculus and linear algebra) but my actual undergrad is a BBA. My IT education includes 4 advanced self taught certifications. I started investing in CD’s, stocks and bonds in 1990, added covered call options in 2000 and long call options in 2005. Even though I had never worked in the finance field, my amateur interest in the financial markets is great enough that senior management asks me my opinion on current issues and trends because of my constant exposure.

As part of my job requirement I will be starting an MBA in September and my course of study is up to me as long as I am working on the graduate degree. Due to my pre-existing interest, heavy coursework in finance, securities and financial math would not be unusual. For political reasons I have to stay in this job for 4 years but I effectively have the opportunity, means and permission to rebuild myself with an eye toward starting on a career in the world of options should I so desire.

I know that during my studies I could ask the professors and advisors about this but I would much rather find someone who is actually doing this to help me structure my courses and studies (formal and self taught) so that while I am being paid to learn I can be learning the things to help me most.

As some here have seen (and answered my questions) I have at least some understanding of options trading. I have found what I think it an effective day trading strategy but it has the significant problems of being unable to scale and requiring constant attention to prevent being on the wrong side of a trend. I need to really learn to do spreads and other long term positions so I can make thousands on a longer term position instead of the $100 per round trip in 15 minutes I target today and not have to watch every minute move from 9:30 to 4:00 all day worrying about missing an instantaneous buying or selling opportunity.

I would very much appreciate it if somebody who has had success in the area of options investing can help me to learn what I need to learn to have the mental tools and experience to be able to seek a career in this arena or barring direct help, help me to find someone who can guide me on this. I don’t think I am asking for a lot of someone’s time but I certainly think it can’t hurt to ask for some help rather than waste money on books or seminars flailing about trying to find that one needle in the haystack of information otherwise uselss to me.

Feel free to contact me directly should you be so inclined.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

I been trading options for some time, focusing on premium selling. My favorite strategy are credit spread and calendars. Dan Sheridan is a great option mentor. You can watch his videos at the cboe.com

I day trade and the stress, though I try to hide it causes my dog to urinate uncontrolable at different times!?

Because of the reaction to my stress, what can I do to stop my one year old dog from urinating and sometimes more in our home. She does not do any thing like that when the market is smooth or the direction of the market is going my way so I know this is the problem.

An example: (The market was and has been especially stressful for quite some time now) however I was being extra sweet with her last evening, put her on the sofa with me (which is rare with my wife or me although our dog loves to be there), she was setting perfectly still and when I picked her up she had fully urinated all over where she was setting. We didn’t punish her, just set her out on the balcony. We live up high so we cannot take her down to the park quick enough when something like that happens. As for taking her for her walks, normally we take her out around 7:30 to 8:30 in the morning and 5:00 to 6:30 in the evening, each outing is anywhere from 30 minutes but more likely an hour to an hour and a half. We also travel a lot sometimes up to a month, leave her in the same kennel she was born in, (the people are extremely nice to her), each time when we return she seems to have enjoyed the stay, she does very well for about a week then she starts this sort of thing all over again. Of course I cannot stop my day-trading so how can we solve this problem?

Thanks,

David

You need to make arrangements for someone to take your dog out to toilet during the day. She doesn’t give a rats about the stock market. She simply needs to go out to toilet and you are asking too much of her to expect her to hold on for so long..

Books on day trading?

I’m starting to get into day trading, was wondering if there are any helpful books out there? Should I go with something like the "For dummies" series? Or is there another book out there that is smaller and gets to the point. I am just looking to learn some techniques, jargons/ terms, just enough to get my feet wet and have some success.

What is your trading system to select the best stocks?

This is my system:

1 – I look at the Zacks Rank and check some of the #1 stocks;
2 – I do some fundamental and technical analysis. I look at the 50 day/200 day moving averages, the ADX, the MACD and the CCI. The 50-day MA has to be above the 200-day MA. The ADX has to be above 30. The MACD has to be above its 9-day EMA. The CCI (20) has to be above 100.
3 – Then I check some news on ths stock and on the sector.

What is your system? Give as many details as possible.

How much would someone pay for a subscription to a stock trading website?

I have been developing a trading strategy for the last 6 months. As of today, 11-12-08, the average winning trade percentage is 92% and of those winning trades, the average gain is 5.97% between 1-5 days. If this strategy were used over the course of a year, an individual’s portfolio would more than triple. I am going to start a website in the upcoming few months to have people subscribe to my picks. I do not know what to charge. Ideas?

You may want to look at Collective2:

http://www.collective2.com

People can subscribe to your system there and you have a number of ways you can charge. One advantage of using them is that you have an independent auditor of your results. Another is that they do all of the billing for you.

Unfortunately, not free.

But even if you decide not to use them, you can still get some idea of what other people are charging for their methods — while seeing what kinds of results they are generating for those charges.

P.S. I hope by "developing a trading strategy for the last 6 months", you don’t mean you’ve been tweaking historical data to generate those results. There have been a few systems on Collective2 that looked great in their presentation of backtest results, but failed miserably going forward.
